January 9, 1884
A Times local, by invitation of John H. Burns, seated himself in a buggy yesterday and with John fingering the ribbons, took in the up gulch. The team consisted of a $40 bronco and a $500 three-year-old-in-the-spring thoroughbred colt that weighs 1200 pounds, and they went as though their heels were geased. The destination was Blacktail gulch, where we found the Gustin 25-stamp mill running with heavily coated plates and the superintendent, Chris Ruth, laughing from ear to ear with the result. The Minerva 40-stamp mill is nearly completed, the buliding, a good one, all enclosed, the boilers and engine in position, and the bateries nearly complete. The tramway header from the mill to the mine is all completed, and April 1st set as the time when they will start up. The Gustin Belt and the Deadbroke people were all at work running ore out of their tunnels, and the whole camp big with hope. The Hildebrand mill at Gayville, as also the mills in Central, are running.
