RE: 1876 Deadwood Genealogy Isaac Robert Crow, news editor 1881-1885 Spearfish News & Dakota Register, Rapid City Republ

Hello -

I've just found this forum and am researching my grandmother's family.  Her name, as was her mother and grandmother, was Helen, and her mother was born Helen E. Crow married name Helen Hurd.  My great-great grandmother was also Helen E. Crow (married name).

My grandmother was born in 1916 so I'd imagine my great-grandma was born in the 1880's and my great-great-grandma in the 1850's give or take.

There are family stories of my family members being baby-sat by Calamity Jane and I don't know how true those are or if it's just legend now.

I do know the Crow family lived in the Black Hills and my grandmother went to visit family back in the 1980's.

Any help would be much appreciated - thanks!

This is fantastic - and yes this must be them!  I had heard stories about my family being in the newspaper business - which is interesting as my cousin is a well-known reporter and I am in P.R. and work with newspapers/write all the time :)

I also found this in the "History of Idaho" - I wonder if there are any records of the newspapes Isaac R Crow kept in the Black Hills area during the 1881 - 1907 time period:

RE: 1876 Deadwood Genealogy Isaac Robert Crow, news editor 1881-1885 Spearfish News & Dakota Register, Rapid City Republ

We have located Helen E. Crow's father.

His full name is Isaac Robert Crow. He was married to Rebecca Louella Campbell. He may be found in Deadwood Historical Newspaper articles as Robert Crow, Isaac R. Crow and I. R. Crow.

Daughter Helen E. Crow, noted as born about December 1886, may have been born in Douglas, Converse County, Wyoming.  The Deadwood historical newspaper article listed below indicates a business move from Douglas to Sturgis, Lawrence, South Dakota June 1887. Issac Robert Crow's son, Ben Claire Crow was born June 9, 1889, in Sturgis, Meade County, Dakota Territory. Dakota Territory became the State of South Dakota, November 2, 1889.

Journal reports that I.R. Crow tells that as soon as he could remove the material of his printing office from Douglas he would commence the publication of a weekly paper at Sturgis.

Absolutely fascinating - thank you!  I am sharing this information with my cousin, who wants to write a life history of our great-great grandfather.

We are related. My great grandmother was Grace Crow, daughter of Isaac.

She was married to Sam Eaton and one of their sons was Edward E Eaton, my grandfather. I have a bunch of family history at home that someone did. I can copy it and send it to you if you want.

I started thinking about it all when we got the TV show "Deadwood" on Netflix. Called my mom and was like "Isn't someone we are related to..."

Hi Amy!

Your mother must be Kathy or Nancy? I never met Ed but he was my sponsor (as a Mason) when I joined Job's Daughters as a girl. He and my mother, Blanche Hurd, were first cousins. We visited Luella and Mildred in Seattle when I was a kid in the 1970s.

We Southern California family members were well-acquainted with Maggie Eaton, who must have been your cousin?, because she lived with my aunt, Helen Hurd Vogt, for several years in the 1980s.

I was in Seattle around 2001 and spoke to Kathy and Nancy, but we weren't able to get together. I am still in touch with Mildred's daughter, Shirley Ruff, who lives in Southern California as well.

Would love to connect with you and get the family history you mentioned below.

Karen
