The Suspicious Suicide of Deadwood's Mining King Daniel Harnett

Widow Hattie Harnett is Left to Take the Reins of Her Husband's Interests

The owner of numerous Deadwood bonanza mines chooses to take his life while friends and three doctors do all they might to turn the sad event. Within a few short days before his suicide, Dan Harnett was out making deals and looking at his mines.

Dan Harnett had been offered $40,000 for The Oriole Mine and refused it, and then had the mine bonded for 30 days at a value of $80,000 Aug 06 1877.

Hattie sold off some of the biggest producers soon after her husband's death, keeping the Emma Ett lode. She was 25 at the time and checked her mines just like a man, and fought off claim jumpers as well. Hattie was quite a woman, and a colorful character.

Tribune: Rich strike of ruby and brittle silver has recently been made in the North Star mine, Ruby Basin. The ore body, so far as explored, is flat and about six feet in thickness. The owners are pushing the work with full shifts, and are naturally very much elated at the wonderful richness of the ore.

Keith and Allabaugh, who have made themselves celebrated in Sturgis City by the superiority of the restaurant they managed, have concluded to change base and put in the winter in this city. They have rented the Harnett property, and commenced yesterday overhauling, cleaning out, remodeling and enlarging the building. When all is ready, they will open out a first-class restaurant, and propose to run such an one as will be popular with the masses.
