Real estate and mining entrepreneur E. B. Farnum was elected as Deadwood's first Mayor September 1876, beating out W. G. Hollins and W. R. Keithly. After running for Deadwood's Justice of the Peace in May 1877 and loosing the election to Charles Barker, the Farnum family remained in Deadwood but for only one year before relocating to Chicago, IL.
