In yesterday's paper we mentioned the murder of James Nugent by Tom Price, at the Theatre Comique, in Omaha. The Tom Price referred to is the man who was captured close to this city in the fall of 1878, by a posse of citizens, as a road agent. He was shot in the bowels with a charge of buckshot, and for weeks it was supposed he was mortally wounded, as the food he ate passed through the punctures made by the buckshot. He was in the hospital here for seveal weeks under the care of Dr. Bab****, who at last brought him through all right. From here he was taken, after recovery, to Cheyenne, where he was convicted of robbing the stage, and sent up for five years, a term he had just served out. March 19, 1884

Original Locations Bullock Hardware and Deadwood Jail
Star and Bullock Hardware was located on the east side of Main at the corner of Wall St and Main in the front lot. The Bullock Warehouse and Fireproof was located at the rear of this lot behind the hardware building. The front hardware site burned down in 1876 and again in 1894 even though the fireproof and warehouse survived both fires. After the hardware site burned for a second time, Seth Bullock built his new hotel over both locations in 1894.

Carbonate camp mining news. It is a mistake to suppose that the Iron Hill constitutes all there is of the Carbonate camp, as there are at least half a dozen locations that have been extensively prospected and developed and show up good ore bodies, the owners of which, although poor men, have done wonders in the way of development, and if it were possible to sell the ore they can take out, would soon, with the capitol thus obtained, astonish the owners of the belt mines. Dick Richards sends us the following from the Carbonate camp: "Nothing new of any great value has been discovered in this camp since last summer, and it is not likely that there will be with the present mode of working "The Iron Hill company have spent plenty of money to find a large body of ore of an unknown extent, if it had been spent elsewhere except in that little water hole or prospect shaft, we may call it. They could have drifted into the Utica ground with a drift of 550, and not over 600 feet under their heaviest croppings of ore and acquired 100 feet greater depth than the bottom of their present shaft, at a cost of not over $5,000 nor less than $4,000, which would be a permanent and servicable roadway for ore and waterway for some years to come, and a far better method to prospect the property than the present one. A prospector, led by surface indications, would never have sunk the shaft where it now is I shall stop, as it is none of my business Nevertheless, as good a company and faithful officials as the Iron Hill parties are, backed by prompt and energetic stockholders, and local, without any foreign or outside aid, they deserve the greatest success. Add more judgment to the economy, gentlemen, and you will have it Dick Richards" March 4, 1884 In regard to: Richards, Dick In regard to: Iron Hill Company In regard to: Carbonate

Saturday last, Star and Bullock sold to Finnegan and McQuillan, merchants of Galena, and stock growers, who are located in Elk Creek valley, Prince Deadwood and King of the Hills, two-year-old thoroughbred stallion colts, sons of Williamsburg, the finest bred horse in the territory. These colts have never tasted grain, but have from birth lived upon the grasses of the range. They weighed respectively 820 and 840 pounds, are fifteen hands high, and have no superiors in the country. When fully developed they will weigh 1200 pounds. This is the first sale of thoroughbreds in the Hills country, if not in the territory, and makes an era in the resources of this country that will make Dakota in the years to come as celebrated as the blue grass regions of Kentucky. The colts were raised on the Star and Bullock stock farm, on the Belle Fourche, that will soon become celebrated throughout the west as the home of the best strains of horses in the world. Williamsburg, the sire of these colts, is sixteen hands high, a beautiful blood bay in color, is kind and gentle as a kitten, a grandson of Lexington, with a pedigree that runs back for sixteen generations to the time of Charles Second in 1666, without a cross by a mongrel. A true account of Mrs. Bullock and Mrs. Merrick arrival from the words of Pioneer Laura Sentman April 1878. These stories were gathered by the General Federation of Women's Clubs of South Dakota and placed in their Pioneer Daughter's Collection.
Laura Sentman "Father met us at the coach station on this side of the Cheyenne River, which Mother said was a raging torrent. We had to cross in a row boat. She put her hand on the side of the boat and her fingers touched water. She said she never knew how she lived through it, until they reached the other side. The day before we crossed, one of the boats tipped over and two people were drowned. After the coach had changed horses and we got something to eat, we were on our way to the Black Hills. Just imagine Mother with two babies and a colored girl whom she brought with her. It took three days and two nights on the way. There were several other ladies with small children and babies who came under similar conditions, Mrs. Bullock, Mrs. Wringrose, Mrs. Hunter, Mrs. Merrick and others. When the coach, driven by six horses, made the turn up Deadwood's Main Street, the driver snapped his whip, the horses galloped up Main Street to the office to unload. It was quite an event to go down town to see the coach come in every day."
