1876 Deadwood Genealogy Laura Sentman Recounts Stage Journey to Deadwood 1878 Passengers Wives of Bullock & Merrick

Martha Bullock Arrives By Stage As Does Mrs. Merrick

A true account of Mrs. Bullock and Mrs. Merrick arrival from the words of Pioneer Laura Sentman April 1878. These stories were gathered by the General Federation of Women's Clubs of South Dakota and placed in their Pioneer Daughter's Collection.

Laura Sentman "Father met us at the coach station on this side of the Cheyenne River, which Mother said was a raging torrent. We had to cross in a row boat. She put her hand on the side of the boat and her fingers touched water. She said she never knew how she lived through it, until they reached the other side. The day before we crossed, one of the boats tipped over and two people were drowned. After the coach had changed horses and we got something to eat, we were on our way to the Black Hills. Just imagine Mother with two babies and a colored girl whom she brought with her. It took three days and two nights on the way. There were several other ladies with small children and babies who came under similar conditions, Mrs. Bullock, Mrs. Wringrose, Mrs. Hunter, Mrs. Merrick and others. When the coach, driven by six horses, made the turn up Deadwood's Main Street, the driver snapped his whip, the horses galloped up Main Street to the office to unload. It was quite an event to go down town to see the coach come in every day."
