To the Editor of the Times: In your last issue you go for my countrymen, myself included for selling opium to your brilliant young men and women. You say that I keep a smoke house, which is not true, as I am at work, and have been for a long time, cooking in a hotel. If I could write in English I could convince everybody that the people who smoke opium are no good, and they would be better off and the world would be no better off if there was no opium to smoke. Producers never smoke, and there are too many consumers now. Kill em off is good. Charley Hopp. In regard to: Hopp, Charley. In regard to: Chinese. November 24, 1883

Not one-half of the ruffanism displayed by Fred Higgins in the murder of Pearl Leopold has ever been told. An inmate of the house at the time states that when Hill and Higgins came in at the front door, Pearl was going up stairs, and was called down by them. Higgins struck her with his pistol and broke her nose. He then shot her, and after emptying their pistols called out in the darkness for Pearl. She answered him from a corner behind the door and told him she was done for. He took her by the hair and dragged her up stairs, undressed her, and after examing her wound expressed himself satisfied that she would die, and with Hill then left the house. Last Saturday night quite a number of the boys were congregated at Al. Fowlers, engaged in playing a game of ten cent cinch. About 12 oclock the game broke up, when one of the players, a prominent merchant of the place, lost ten cents on the floor. Al began to douse the glims, preparatory to closing up, when there was a general cry of "Hold on, Al.; there is ten cents lost on the floor." There were about twenty people in the room at the time, and they all joined in the hunt for the lost coin. Everything portable was moved, even to a quarter of a cord of wood from back of the stove. The hunt had lasted over an hour, when it leaked out that a bystander had found it just after it had been lost and spent it for a schooner of beer. The congregation were then dismissed with a benediction by the presiding elder and Al. closed the house and went home. In regard to: Fowler, Al. March 4, 1884
Tenderfoot Poem Death of a Dog Her demeanor so mild, her intelligence rare; in her strifes she was wild, for her own she would care. Many years did she live--many foes has she met; she would never forgive, nor would ever forget. You can just bet your boots she was no tenderfoot. Requiescat in pace. May 6, 1884
New cow boy was seen on the streets last night, and he was so gorgeously arrayed in new clothes, silver spurs and a four inch metalic hat band that glistened like an electric light, that the Deadwood rounders thought he was a bonanza king, and were all anxious to form his acquaintance. A Times reporter, however, solved the mysterey, as he found by a close inspection that it was John Missouri, the efficient deputy sheriff, who was out masquerading. March 13, 1884 In regard to: John Missouri alias John T. Wingfield
Jacob Goldberg is a merchant, buys goods and sells them, and occasionally goes out in the country for a ride. On one of these occasions he put up with a rancher in the valley for a horse feed and dinner, at the noon hour. The dinner was a good one, with the buttermilk accompaniments, and after the usual rest and smoke, he inquired the amount of his bill, and was told by the hoary headed granger, that the presence of his company more than compensated for the first cost of the provisions destroyed, and that he would in the future consider it a favor to have him call frequently and partake of his hospitality. Since that time he has been a solid friend of Mr. Goldberg, calls on him whenever he comes to town, asks after his health, and advises him in regard to the prospects of the coming vegetables. Last week he came to town, and told Goldberg in a very patronizing way that he had two sacks of potatoes, 200 pounds, of a superior variety, the last of a big load, and that he could have them for a cent a pound, $2 for the lot, sacks and all, the finest by all odds that had ever been offered in this market, the kind that first class housewives go crazy after, worth double the amount asked for them, but for old acquaintance sake he would let them go at that figure. Jakey took them at that figure, weighed them not, neither the sacks did he open to gaze upon their pristine loveliness, laid two dollars down, and then laid the two sacks of murphies down by the stove. The next morning the floor of the store was covered with water, and an examination proved that it came from the potatoes, they having been frozen solid before their entry into the store. The potatoes now lay on the sidewalk and a gentle, mild eyed youth, with a large fair complexion, awaits with Jocob. In regard to: Goldberg, Jacob. March 14, 1884
Jim Woods has bought a cowboy suit entire, but has not donned it all at once. Like caster oil, he takes it in broken doses. The hat, a broad rimmed with a glistening band, he is breaking in, and the leather pants, big spurs and deadly gun will be put in position within a day or two. When thus accoutered he will at least look bad. March 19, 1884 In regard to: Woods, Jim.
We speak only from rumor, as the will made by John Hildebrand has not yet been opened and attested, but we understand that he made a testament, and in it provided for the disposition of his property. He has a wife and three children in the state of Ohio whom he had not seen for several years, but who were provided for by him during his residence in the west. Since going out of the mercantile business in this city several years ago, he has been in the cattle business, locating first on Dead Horse creek, above Hulens ranch some distance, and latterly on a pre-emption claim not far from Minnesela, in Butte county. His property consisted of four horses, wagon, harnesses, saddles, and such property, and a bunch of cattle, estimated at from 500 to 800 head, all of them American cattle of a superior quality, with not one Texan or mixed blood among them. His will provides that after the pavement of his debts, his property shall be equally divided between his wife, three children and French Em, who has kept house for him since he has been in the cattle business, share and share alike. We understand that Jack Robinson was made executor of the estate, and in his selection the testator exhibited his usual good judgment, as no more capable or competent person could have been selected. In regard to: Hildebrand, John. In regard to: French Em. In regard to: Robinson, Jack. March 20, 1884
Butcher and saloon keeper of Brownsville battle for the hand of a Deadwood damsel. A butcher and a saloon keeper, of Brownsville, both were suitors for the hand of a Deadwood damsel. They became jealous, as a natural consequence, and, in a playful mood, the saloon keeper pulled one of the butchers ears until the roots cracked. This made him made, and he turned in and everlastingly wolloped his adversary, winding up by hanging him up by the seat of his nether garments on one of the meat hooks in the shop.
