Gayville, a mining community 2 miles from Deadwood, was completely destroyed by fire on August 18, 1877. The fire originated in the Varnes X 10 U S Restaurant when it's cloth ceiling was ignited by a stovepipe. Deadwood Hook & Ladder helped to put out the fire. Over 41 business buildings were consumed in the fire: Drug Store Wood & Mann, Wilson J.W. Gem Theatre, Whitehead Ed dry goods, Walters & McKennis store, Vaughen Edward Vaughen Hotel, Smelser Jack Smelcer & Reed Capitol Restaurant, Shultz H.A. Boots & Shoes, Schaffer H.
