Expedition of October 1874
"The grouping was as follows: No. 1 being composed of Capt. Tom Russell, Lyman Lamb, Eaf. Witcher, and, Angus McDonald. No. 2, B. B. Logan, Dan McDonald,or Red Dan, Dan McDonald, or Black Dan (the last two, bearing the same patronymic, were distinguished by the color of the shirts they invariably wore), James Dempster, James Powers, J. J. Williams, and Thomas Quiner. 3rd, John Gordon, J. W. Brockett, Newton Warren, H. Bishop, Chas. Long, Chas Cordeiro and Moses Aarons. 4th, R. R. Whitney, Harry Cooper, David Aken, and John Boyle. 5th, Chas. Blackwell, Thos. McLaren, Henry Thomas, D. Tallent, Annie D. Tallent, and Robt. E. Tallent, then a boy nine years of age, making twenty-eight in all."

'Died on the 27th day of November, 1874, on his way to the Black Hills, Moses Aaron, aged 32 years. May he rest in peace.'

"The expedition, it its entirety, was composed of twenty-six men, one woman, and a boy, six canvas-covered wagons, each drawn by two pairs of fat, sleek, and a few of them somewhat frisky cattle - by the way, they were neither so fat nor sleek, and not in the least frisky at the end of the journey. There were also five saddle horses, and two beautiful greyhounds (Dan & Fan), who frequent frantic chases after the poor timid antelope and rabbit, proved the source of much diversion to the expedition on its long, monotonous march across the bleak, treeless plains."

December 23, 1874, the expedition reached the prior gold discovery sites made by Ross and McKay on French Creek a few miles below the new town site of Custer that would be established in August 1875. A winter camp was constructed which they named "Gordon Stockade". The expedition remained at this site until March of 1875 when they began to lay out and survey for a proposed new town site they were going to name Harney City. By April of 1875, the US Army had reached their location and placed all of the expedition members under arrest for trespass. The army then escorted the expedition out of the Black Hills to Fort Laramie where they were then given transportation to Cheyenne.

The Tallent family would not return to the Black Hills until the spring of 1876.  D. G. Tallent became actively involved in local Deadwood Democratic politics in 1877 and owned several carbonate coal fields near Spearfish and in Hay Creek Wyoming 1878 - 1879. By 1880 D. G. Tallent moved his interests towards real estate and mining brokerage and formed a company with Stephen J. Scriber of Elmira New York. Tallent & Scriber rented and sold houses, lots and mines. The Tallent family moved to Rochford in the fall of 1880. Annie Tallent served as the superintendent of Pennington County schools from 1891-1895 and on Pennington County's Board of Education for three years.

Publications of the period has referred to this group of adventurous pioneers as the Union Stockade Party.

Potter's American Monthly, Volumes 4 - 5, pgs. 619 - 620, J. E. Potter and Company, 1875, the following excerpts: "The action of the government in thus suppressing a daring enterprise was entirely justifiable. The Indians do not hold the coveted grounds by mere suffrance. A treaty with the Sioux expressly stipulated that the territory now known as the Black Hills country, in consideration of important concessions made by the Indians, should be held and conceded as unceded Indian territory, and that no persons should be permitted to occupy any portion of it, or even to pass through it, without the consent of the Indians first obtained. It was also provided that no treaty for the cession of any portion of this reservation should be held of any validity or force unless signed by at least three-fourths of the adult male Indians occupying or interested in it. There were other articles in the treaty intended to give the Indians an undisputed title to the occupancy of this country."

"Some miners taken out by the troops from the Union Stockade, Custer's Gulch, at the Black Hills, reported at Cheyenne, Wyoming, April 23, of this year. They brought back with them sufficient placer gold- and silver-bearing quartz to demonstrate that under more favorable auspices mining can be made profitable. They fully corroborated previous reports as to the superior quality and size of the pine timber, and said that there are many valleys where oak and other varieties of timber are abundant. As our readers have learned from the newspapers, the Government is seeking honorably to purchase the Black Hills tract from the Indians." "Meanwhile, a party of gentlemen, constituting a scientific expedition, have been sent by the Department of the Interior to the Black Hills, attended by General Custer. They consist of Walter P. Jenny, Geologist in Charge, formerly Geologist of the Texas Pacific Railroad; Surveyor W. Newton, Assistant Geologist of these Surveys, and Captain P. Tuttle, Astronomer of the Cambridge Observatory; J. P. McGillycuddy, topographer of the Western boundary, and Dr. Cleveland Newberry, naturalist. "
