RE: Louis P. Stone

Your welcome. I have had the image of Hukill Bonanza Meat Market for several years waiting to share it with a relative, in your case somewhat removed; however, it has been waiting for you. It is a perfect example of real life in Deadwood's very beginnings. It had to be dusted off and experienced from someone who might care about the characters in this image. I am sure we have made Butcher Hukill's day, where ever he is enjoying life at the moment.

You might want to visit our sister site http://bloggerdeadwood.blogspot.com/  for a good feel of Deadwood life as it began to grow in the middle of no where inside legally granted Indian property. A town outside of US law, for a brief fleeting moment.

Your ancestor L. P. Stone is also a Deadwood Pioneer from almost the very beginning of this area growing into something more than miner's tents in the gulches. He brought to the camp some of the few pleasures in life, like good food and a real bed to sleep in. Most of the pioneers would have been very familiar with L. P. Stone and his variety of hotels, eating establishments and variety entertainment houses over the years.

Here are a few more remaining tidbits, and there are more things that are left yet to be discovered. You should make a trip to Deadwood, visit the museum and spend a lot of time at the library. I am sure I have missed many things about L. P. Stone but I think you have most of the relevant facts. You should also investigate Lawrence County mining patents, as I believe L.P. Stone may have one.

Interesting Item: Big Deadwood Fire September 1879, Stone's Hotel perished in Chinatown. This area of Deadwood at the time would have been quite lawless, full of gambling establishments, saloons, variety theatres, dance halls, opium dens, and houses of prostitution. The story has it Sheriff Seth Bullock served up the law on upper Main Street Deadwood while Gem Theatre Proprietor Al Swearingen ruled lower Main Street and Chinatown.

The majority of all wood buildings burnt to the ground and an unidentified charred body was found in Stone's restaurant. There were very few cases of loss of life in this fire. This fire utterly destroyed all town structures and livelihoods but the town was back in business by December 1879. What a wonderful group of individuals that got back on their feet in short notice.

RE: Louis P. Stone

Thank you so much for the info on Catherine Turner. I don't believe the other Turners are any relation. I have no records of Reuben A. Turner after the marriage certificate in 1860, Hamilton Co. Ohio. His first wife died in 1858 Cuyahoga Co. Ohio and their daughter was raised by her grandparents.

Catherine E. Turner was living with L.P & Emma Stone in 1870, Dayton, Campbell Co. KY. No sign of Reuben A. Turner.

I have to tell you, I am still pinching myself to make sure I'm not dreaming that I found this site. I have been researching since the 1960's and have never found any site that is so helpful. You are an angel and I will be singing your praises for a long time to come.
Thank you, over and over again,
Lois

RE: Louis P. Stone

L. P. Stone, was the son of Lucien L. and Catherine E. "Kate" (Phillips) Stone Turner. Lucien died in Vermont and Catherine left with her son L. P. for Hamilton County, Ohio, where L.P. married Emma Hukill and his mother Kate married Reuben A. Turner. The family then moved to Campbell County, Kentucky and in the 1885 Census, L.P., Emma, their daughter Bessie and Catherine Turner were living side by side in Butte County, SD. By 1888 both L.P., his family and mother Catherine were living in Deadwood.

I am trying to find information on the death and burial of Catherine E. "Kate" Turner. You've been so helpful, I decided to take the chance you may have some information on her.
Thank You,
Lois

My "old" brain must have kicked in, I see you have a burial listed for Emma. Sorry to have bothered you.

RE: Louis P. Stone

Thank you for the wonderful historical photos. They will go in my family tree with credit to the Deadwood Genealogy Research Team and your website address.
You have been so kind and I appreciate your efforts in helping me. You have been so helpful in filling in my family tree. May I please ask another favor? Is there a listing in any cemetery in Deadwood for Emma F. (Hukill) Stone, wife of L.P. Stone who was murdered 17 May 1897? Mount Moriah has no listing for her online. Emma was the daughter of Richard S. and Emeline (Pyle) Hukill who were also in Deadwood for a time.
Bless You,
Lois

A reference to the murder of Emma Stone can be found: San Francisco Call, Volume 81, Number 167, 16 May 1897, http://cdnc.ucr.edu/cgi-bin/cdnc?a=d&d=SFC18970516.2.26

It is possible this murder took place outside of Deadwood, possibly near Crook City, where Charles Brown was noted to have owned a ranch in the area.

We were unable to locate any Deadwood Historical Newspaper Articles concerning the murder of Mrs. L.P. Stone nor any articles discussing the murder of the wife of L. P. Stone and his daughter Bessie Stone while they resided in Deadwood.

We were unable to locate any Deadwood Historical Newspaper Articles relating to Charles Brown, a cook for the Keystone Restaurant in Deadwood nor the lynching of Charles Brown for the murder of Emma Stone. Dr. J. A. Paddock whom has been referenced in some print as one of the doctors whom examined the body of Emma Stone did not permanently reside in Deadwood until 1890, three years after the murder.

Louis P. Stone

Col. Louis P. Stone, born Jan 1843, New York, son of U. L. and Catherine "Kate" (Phillips) Stone owned the Keystone Restaurant and an opera house in Deadwood. His wife Emma was murdered in a robbery at the restaurant by Charles Brown on May 17, 1897. Louis and Emma had a daughter Bessie.

Does anyone know where I can find a photo of Louis or Emma or their place of business. Louis is a cousin and any information or photos would be most appreciated.

Louis is buried in Mount Moriah Cemetery and I suspect he is buried beside his wife.  Louis enlisted in the Navy during the Civil War.

Thank You.
