Perhaps this is why Harry Deleray was a Prohibitionist

Knights of Labor

"Ideology

The Knights primary demand was for an eight-hour day; they also called for legislation to end child and convict labor, as well as a graduated income tax. They were eager supporters of cooperatives.

The Knights of Labor had a mixed history of inclusiveness and exclusiveness, accepting women and blacks (after 1878) and their employers as members, and advocating the admission of blacks into local assemblies, but tolerating the segregation of assemblies in the South. Bankers, doctors, lawyers, stockholders, and liquor manufacturers were excluded because they were considered unproductive members of society. Asians were also excluded, and in November 1885, a branch of the Knights in Tacoma, Washington worked to expel the city's Chinese, who amounted to nearly a tenth of the overall city population at the time. The Knights were also responsible for race riots that resulted in the deaths of about 28 Chinese Americans in the Rock Springs massacre in Wyoming, and an estimated 50 African-American sugar-cane laborers in the 1887 Thibodaux massacre in Louisiana. The Knights strongly supported the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 and the Contract Labor Law of 1885, as did many other labor groups, although the group did accept most others, including skilled and unskilled women of any profession.

The Knights of Labor attracted many Catholics, who were a large part of the membership, perhaps a majority. Powderly was a Catholic. However, the Knights's use of secrecy, similar to the Masons, during its early years concerned many bishops. The Knights used secrecy to help prevent employers from firing members. After the Archbishop of Quebec condemned the Knights in 1884, twelve American archbishops voted 10 to 2 against doing likewise in the United States. Furthermore, Cardinals James Gibbons and John Ireland defended the Knights. Gibbons went to the Vatican to talk to the hierarchy.[4]"

However, Harry seemed to have soft spot for Dr. Rogers.


Early pioneer, Frank Zipp Shoe Store, Bed Rock Store, Main St, was a member of the Ancient Order United Workmen, a secrect society, and was instrumental in bringing in the socialist organization of the Knights of Labor into the labor affairs of Deadwood's mining community.

I prefer a margarita but wine is good too. Isn't history informative.

Wow, you're good! I didn't have a lot of that information. My great grandmother was Clara, and it makes sense that her mothers maiden name was Marlow because that is what she named my grandfather. This all is very helpful. Thank you so much!!!

I wanted to mention to you that if you are not an Ancestry.com member, there is a photo of Clara on a family tree. I do not know if this is your personal tree. I also found another member that is following Harry Deleray in a tree built in Australia. Some of the Deleray line may have moved there at some time.

Here are a list of some interesting articles you might want to get a copy of from Deadwood Public Library. For a small fee they will make copies and mail them to you. It will give you some insight into the personal beliefs of Harry Deleray.

We know from these articles and others that I have mentioned to you that Harry Deleray was involved in organizing Labor in Deadwood and as well he was also a Prohibitionist. He was an officer of a Secret Society and believed in bringing the Railroad into Deadwood. We further know whom was one of his best friends and whom he associated with in town.

A few articles will tell you something of what was happening in his personal life right at the time of the photograph of his business in the  parade photo such as he was traveling right before the photo was taken and his business and or home had an attempted breakin some two months after the photo. Just some interesting tidbits to step back into time.

Most of Sherman St is now new gambling casinos. I would check with Adams Museum at 54 Sherman St, Deadwood, SD, (605) 578-1928 as they have many photographic collections containing pioneer business owners. You might also do some research on the Modern Woodmen of America as Harry Deleray was a member. Someone might have some historical photos of Deadwood members.

I guess I am curious- Do you know whether that building is still standing? Any ideas of where there might be pictures of Harry. He has been the most difficult branch of my family tree to research. I would love to know what he looked like. He was my Great Grandfather.

I was wondering if anybody knew the address of Harry DeLeray's shop? Does that building still stand? Are there any pictures of him? Any advice on where to reach out in the Deadwood area for more information?
