A James Madden died in Leadville 1884. Leadville Daily Herald (Leadville, Lake County); Date: Sep 27, 1884; Section: None; Page: 4 Pneumonia, occupation gambler.
I have obtained a copy of James Madden's power of attorney. It turns out it was actually created on July 27, 1878 and notarized by Charles E. Barker, Justice of the Peace. James isn't found in the 1880 census. I think it is a strong possibility he is the guy who ran against Con Stapleton. By 1880 he had left town, perhaps heading for Leadville where his cousin was trying his luck.
I'm trying to unearth any information about my ancestor, James Madden. Here is what I know about him:
Born 1841 in Rigaud, near Montreal. Leaves Canada in 1866. Living in Goodhue, MN in 1872. Living in Deadwood on Nov. 18, 1882, where he files a power of attorney document for use back in Canada.
Elsewhere on the site there is mention of a J. Madden arriving in 1876. Later that year he runs for Marshall (Con Stapleton is the victor). Could this be the same James Madden from Canada?
I'm grateful for any information anyone can provide.
