Obituary of Samuel Allen Young, who was called to rest Monday, April 27, 1914. Captain Samuel A. Young, whose death occurred at his home in Upton, WY, April 27th, has been in this community the past thirty-five years, and is known by every "old timer" in the country far and wide. Mr. Young was born in Ohio, April 27, 1833; was married to Sophia A. Steiger May 12, 1859. Come to Iowa in 18, enrolled in the service of the United States in August 1861 in Co. H 3rd Iowa Volunteer cavalry. Was mustered out August 1863, enlisted as a private and was mustered out as a 1st Lieutenant. Remained in Iowa until April 1876, came to Cheyenne, Wyoming, and on the 22 day of June started for the Black Hills, arriving in Deadwood on the 14th day of July. Remained in Deadwood until 1880, coming then to Wyoming and locating on a ranch in Crook County, near Inyan Kara Mountain. In 1882 a mail route was established from Spearfish, South Dakota to Hat Creek in Wyoming, and he was appointed Postmaster at Inyan Kara, which he held for 12 years. In 1904 was elected Couny Commissioner of Crook County. In 1904 was appointed Receiver of the Land office at Sundance until the fall of 1902 and moving back to the ranch remaining until 1907, then disposing of the ranch and locating in Upton engaged in the drug business. In 1908 he was elected to the legislature from Weston County and was re-elected in 1910. In 1912 was appointed US Commissioner at Upton, having sent in his resination since his illness. Six children were born, five of which are living; Mrs. Thomas Howey, Moon, South Dakota, Mrs. Joe Card, Mrs. Charles Parker, and G.L.Young, of Upton, Mrs. George Townsend, Manford, Florida, and Will Young who died a few years ago. Services were held at the church in Upton, Rev. Toland officiating assisted by Rev. Caldwell and M. Nichols, after the services the remains were taken to Sundance where interment was made Wednesday afternoon. (He mustered out as a First Lieutenant; however always went by "Captain" Young...?)

Thomas Alexander Howey was born at Bucyrus, Crawford County, OH, May 23, 1848,(headstone has 1949) and passed to the Great Beyond at his home at Moon, SD, Wednesday, August 22, 1923. At the age of three years he moved with his parents to Illinois, where he resided and attended school at Chicago, IL, during the years of 1864 and 1865. The following year he went to Missouri where he taught school for three years. From there he went through Oklahoma, Colorado, Kansas, and into the Black Hills in the year of 1875. On October 3, 1877, he was united in marriage to Miss Ida Viola Young. To this union twelve children were born, all living but one daughter, Anna Margaret "Little Maggie," who died February 26, 1904. The deceased leaves to mourn his loss, a wife and eleven children, twenty-seven grand children, and one brother. All children but three boys were present at the funeral services. The children present were Mrs. Addie Brennan of Hardin, Montana, Thomas Allen Howey, of Missoula, MT, Claude Douglas Howey of Newcastle, WY, Charles Garland Howey of Alzada, MT, William Nye Howey of Musselshell, MT, Bonny Cuthbert Howey of Moon, SD, Mrs. Ruby L. Jenkins of Upton, WY, LeRoy E. Howey of Deerfield, SD, Mrs. Hazel L. Miller of Deerfield, and Mrs. Valentine Sauer of Custer, SD; and one brother, Douglas Howey of Kearney, NE. The funeral services were held on Thursday afternoon at the Methodist Church in Newcastle, Rev. M. C. Roberts officiating. The interment was held in the Newcastle Cemetery.
