MATHIESON

Looking for references to activity of the Mathieson brothers, George, Dick, Bob and Jud, in Deadwood and the mining districts. They were living in Yankton from 1862. Dick Mathieson accompanied Custer on his 1874 expedition into the Black Hills. Dick returned to mine in 1875. The 4 brothers shipped goods to the Hills from 1876. They sent goods upriver from Yankton by steamer to Fort Pierre and then freighted them overland by oxtrain. Brothers eventually settled at Pierre and Fort Pierre and were variously engaged in ranching, banking saloon and sporting house enterprises. George elected to the state house in the early 1890s.
