: My Family lived in Deadwood for a short time and Grandma Augusta was the third Settler in the rapid city area. She moved to Rockerville and Homesteaded with the rest of the family : At the Age of 41 and 1/2 years Wilhelm left the fatherland. After 36 days at sea they landed at New York City, Aug. 3, 1847 and settled at Napolean, Ohio. The family consisted of Wilhelm and his wife Anna Katharina, six children and Wilhelm father, John Adam Zink, Jr. who lived a little over a year in the new country, died 28 Sept. 1848.
A month later a baby girl was born and died, thus their live were saddened and the two graves in the new land strengthened their ties and love for their new home. Eight years later they were called to lay away their son Adam, 21 years old.
Wilhelm raised his family along the line of patriotism and his four sons and sons in law countered their services and marched away to war, in behalf of the union. They were all in the service to the finish, re enlisting as their time expired shortly after the their return from the war, the sons were called upon to lay their mother beside the graves of her children and father in law. This marked a new epoch for Wilhelm. He concluded to join his sons and go westward. In 1866 , reaching the parries of Nebraska, they homestead land 4 miles northeast of Sterling Neb. Wilhelm and his sons Nicklaus, Johannas, Valentine and George Michael each filed on a quarter section of land and endured the hardships of pioneering.
Wilhelm and John returned to Ohio and remained there. Wilhelm died at the home of daughter Eva Margueretta Homan, 20 Nov,1879. He had resided in the Hohensachen,Germany, Grossherzogturn, Baden, Napoleon, Ohio, and Sterling, Neb.
George was civil war veteran and Married Nov.12,1871. Augusta said he was not a real religious person. One of his sons Roscoe was born when he was 34 years old and she was thirty. George was born in Hamburg Germany. He died at the age of 56 with heart trouble.
George worked in the Desmet mines. He liked to cook. He also lived in Napolean,Ohio where some of the Zink family died. He may have also lived in Sterling Neb. He moved to the Black Hills one year prior to Augusta coming to the Black Hills. and they Homestead around 1880. He died at Keystone S.D.
The first child was Melville who was born Nov.11,1873 near Sterling, Neb. He later moved to Spokane, Washinton where he later died. He was noted as a Bronco Twister which means a horse breaker. He married Minnie Eastman called Aunt Nina and they had one daughter Melta Zink
The second child was named Edith Zink and she married a Warren. I meet Wayne one year before he died. He was born in Napolean, Ohio and they had two boys. They homestead near spring Creek and one of the boys was Wayne. He went to school with my Dad and the Zink girls. They came to South Dakota in the 1880's. This is the family that did the search on the Polenz family from Prussia. Edith was buried at Mountain View Cemetery. Her death date was Nov.17,1960.
The address for the family was Spring Creek Rd. Hermosa, S.D.57744. Wayne died a few months after we talked. His second wife was real jealous of the Zinks and did not want him talking about them. The other brother was named Paul.
The third child was named John born June 19,1879 in Central City South Dakota. He married Lottie Blanchard. June 16,1919 at Deadwood. and was a rancher by trade. Some of the people said he was the least industrious of the kids. He did farm at the Zink Homestead some Lottie took care of Guy Gilberts children when his first wife died He remarried and his second wife died. His third wife is still living. we meet her but Guy did not have a lot to say about the Zinks. He seemed rather quiet and reserved.
John had two children by the names of Vera Lucilen and Verna Augusta. Both were born in Hill City South Dakota. They now live in the state of Washington in the town of Bremertown. : Rockerville Cemetery is where three of the falily are burried George Augusta and Ben.
They had a HOMSTEAD just up the road from town of rockerville. with the keifers : workes the desmet mines roscoe cooked for the miners worked logging : New york city Napolean, Ohio Sterling Nebraska Rapid City Sd Webster Mt. or Baker
